As at all Griffin Dyeworks Fiber events ... we'll have two types of classes at the Fiber Frolic: Formal and Informal.

Informal Classes

Aside from the dyepots which will be bubbling all day long, we all have fiber knowledge that we can share with others. In that spirit, the strength of the Griffin Dyeworks Fiber events is the informal class.

These classes are available on a drop in basis. The instructors make an announcement when they're ready to teach and folks can wonder over and see what's happening.

All attendees are welcome to share their knowledge in an informal class: short or long. If you're interested in teaching an informal class, please email our .

Natural Dyeing by Bjo and Crew

Have dyepots bubbling all day and attempt to teach people how to dye. We will explore 'imported' color: indigo, cochineal, brazilwood, kamala, etc., as well as local finds: dodder, Scotch broom, mustard weed, etc. No bluejeans, no jackets, no unwashed fleece in the dyepots (they use up ALL the dye!)

MATERIALS THE STUDENTS SHOULD BRING: Yarn, fabric or clothing to dye
All day
Child Friendly!

Spinning Circle

Bring your wheel or drop spindles and spin with us - share your tips & techniques with others or get advice! Open to all skill levels. Loaner spindles available to try!

Formal Classes

These classes are several hours long. The teachers will provide materials for a project that students can work on throughout the day. There may be a fee for the class to cover the teacher's material costs for practice kits (these are requested to be kept under $10).

Some teachers may have deluxe kits available for a higher price. If you enjoyed the new skill you learned, please consider supporting your teacher!

Leno and Other Weaver-manipulated Lace Weaves by Jan Ward
Leno, Brook’s Bouquet, Spanish Lace and Danish Medallion are ways of introducing lace-type patterning into a two-harness plain-weave structure. These can be done on rigid heddle or harness looms, or even on an inkle loom.

This class is suitable for people who have some experience weaving two harness weaves. Teenaged student with weaving experience is OK.

Class Length: 2 hours
Limited to 6 students
Class Fee $5.00
MATERIALS THE STUDENTS SHOULD BRING: A rigid heddle loom or harness loom, already warped in one color of yarn (preferably) . Two stick shuttles, one wound with the same yarn as the warp, and a second in a heavier yarn of the same or a different color. A pick-up stick. A crochet hook. If you want to try these weaves on an inkle loom, I’d suggest a 3 to 4 inch width, so you can see more than one motif.

Class Fee $5.00
